Darlington (Dearthington in Anglo Saxon times) is a large Market Town sitting atop North Yorkshire. It has a rich and proud history in the railway industry which was delivered by the vision of Quakers in Georgian and Victorian times; it was their money and philanthropy that delivered the first steam railway, the Stockton to Darlington railway, in 1825.

This history is still celebrated annually with the ‘Festival of Ingenuity’ held in the Market Square in the Town Centre and if you are a ‘steam head’, the living/working museum celebrating the same is just near Darlington train station and is well worth a visit.

The Darlington Hippodrome theatre is close to completing its multi-million-pound renaissance and with the addition of Theatre Hullabaloo a teaching and learning venue for the creative arts, this cultural offer is well worth a visit.

The newly opened Feethams cinema and restaurant development adjacent to the Dolphin Sports and Swimming Centre completes the town centre offer. The town is an excellent base for exploring North Yorkshire and the Tees Valley and plays host to themed market events and entertainment all year round and of course, the Steam Museum.

Darlington Indoor Market
The Indoor Market opened on the 2nd May 1864 and the first purchase was of a leg of mutton, bought by Mr J. Wrightson the Landlord of the Sun Inn. Over 150 years later the covered market is still a great destination for shoppers, and truly provides something for everyone. Meet the Traders.

Darlington Outdoor Market
The Outdoor Market can trace its’ history back to medieval times, in the twelfth century Darlington was named one of the Bishop’s Boroughs- giving it the right to hold markets. For over 400 years the open market has been trading on Saturdays and Mondays, a tradition which still holds true today.

The open market extends down High Row, and offers the opportunity to enjoy a range of goods, including vinyl’s, jewellery, clothes and fruit and vegetables. There are also many other stalls, each with a unique product to sell. Why not wander down High Row and see what the market has to offer- followed by lunch in one of the market’s food outlets!
